Understanding digital infrastructure
RVA757 Connects has created this resource center to spotlight the growing world of digital infrastructure, including data centers, across our megaregion and state.
This Resource Center seeks to offer clear, accessible insights and information into the digital infrastructure ecosystem — its components, its economic and community impact, and the policies shaping its growth — to better equip local leaders, stakeholders, and the public to engage with and help guide this vital sector.
Data centers are one piece of a larger digital infrastructure ecosystem, which has a broader set of benefits, opportunities, and challenges.
Why digital Infrastructure matters
A robust and growing digital infrastructure ecosystem supports world-class communications and connections for existing and new industries and their ever increasing technology needs. Modern digital infrastructure includes data centers, local terrestrial networks, internet exchanges connecting these networks, trunk lines to other localities, and subsea cables.
A powerful digital infrastructure ecosystem supports the growth of high-paying IT/Tech jobs and ensures the industries of tomorrow will locate and expand in the I-64 Innovation Corridor. All of this will help grow our overall GDP, workforce, productivity per worker, wages, and, in turn, economic prosperity for all.
